Wednesday - Jan 2 Good bye New York, Hello Cruise ship

Slept well Packed up. Went for breakfast down the street to the other little bakery cafe instead of our lovely Manhattan Diner. We had corn muffins and French toast muffins which were actually more like muffins than either corn bread or French toast.

We checked out  and brought our luggage out to the curb. they called a cab for us this time so we did not have to hail one. A very short cab ride to the port past parks and playgrounds along the Hudson River with New Jersey on the other side.
Waiting with our number 9 group to get on,  we thought we were at the end of the loading groups but then we started to see numbers 27 and 28 and realized that we were at the front of the line of loading groups and we were glad that we got there a little bit early. We Booked our specialty restaurants on board, picking days that were all at sea days and got one for the Panama Canal day.
As we were getting on Margie got a phone call halfway up the gangplank from Chrissy in Edmonton. Of Course by the time she stopped and put down her carryon and got her phone out it had stopped ringing and she was left wondering if something was wrong in Edmonton.

The crew were all very good at helping us and directing us to an area to wait until our rooms were ready.  We went up to the garden buffet to have a bit of lunch  but it was so full of everyone else who could also not get into their rooms, that we ended up eating outside at the back of the ship. We found a table , left our carryons and got a plateful of food which tasted pretty good . I had steamed veggies. Mushrooms, Cauliflower au gratin and salad.  As it was quite chilly Margie had Mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and cottage pie , which we think is another name for shepherds pie. We went out on deck pulling our carryons along with us, and took photos of New York from the ship. A different perspective entirely.

When they opened up the decks and gave us access to our rooms the public decks cleared out pretty quick. Some passengers already had suitcases waiting for them outside their staterooms but ours were not there yet. Finding our lovely room was a breeze and we happily unpacked our carryons and designated /divided which shelves, drawers and hangers were for who. Margie and I travel well together because we both want to be organized to some degree most of the time.

We went down to deck 7 to the internet desk to discover there was a line of people requiring help and only one internet tech on duty. So we just wandered around trying to get our bearings and burn the layout of the ship into our brains. We got a seat at O’Sheehans and had a cup of tea which was very good. We found our emergency station, CI, by the Orchid restaurant for the emergency drill at 4:30. It is a good thing to know as we were really going out to sea on this voyage.  After the drill we went back to the internet area and got to stand closer to the front of the line as it was shorter, to get the internet minutes divided between us.

The Ship departed a little bit later than usual and so the lights of New York  were blazing  so we went on deck as we departed the docks to get a picture of New York at night. It was very cold out and neither of us had not worn our coats as we were thinking that we would be inside and able to get the statue of liberty from our room. We could not so were on the other side of the ship running in and out to see if we were close enough yet.
By the time we were close enough to get a good photo we were frozen. We went to dinner at the grand Pacific dining room and sat with Kevin and Peggy from Fredricton New Brunswick, and Judy and Eleanore from long Island New York.  We had a lovely dinner and then went to the show which was the first so not really a show but a quick peek at some of the its that we would be seeing later on in the cruise.
After the show we went back to our room to find our luggage had been delivered so we unpacked and checked out the  tv channels and the weather. there were 2 foot waves which did not seem very bad at all. after one more time going out onto our balcony, slipping into sleep was easy
